What changed. What still works.
Search has accumulated capabilities over time. The useful foundations remain; the way customers encounter and compare your business has expanded.
Search + AI-assisted choices
People can ask multi-part questions and receive an answer assembled from several sources with selected sources and options. Different products retrieve, cite and recommend differently; conventional search still matters.
Keep
Crawlable, useful pages; truthful business facts; genuine reputation; an effective purchase path.
Retire
Universal AI ranking scores, secret inclusion guarantees, fabricated mentions and treating training access as a recommendation switch.
Apply it now: Make it easy to verify that your business fits a particular need, and test what each platform actually says. Measure citations, recommendations and business outcomes separately.
The question has become more specific.
A search might begin with “heat-pump repair Austin.” A conversational request can add system age, budget, timing, neighborhood and a request to compare three providers. Your pages should contain the facts needed to evaluate those constraints.
That is a reason to publish useful detail and proof. It is not evidence of a universal new ranking formula.
